Preparing for Your Assessment
Once you’ve booked your appointment, we’ll provide everything you need to prepare for your assessment. If you have any questions before your appointment, our team will be happy to help.
QbCheck
We use QbCheck, an objective, computer-based measure completed at our Warrington clinic. It is always used alongside clinical interview and questionnaires, never in isolation.
Executive Functioning Measures
We use Browns Executive Function Scales, completed online before your appointment, and other recognised questionnaires to understand how executive functioning affects everyday life. For children, we also gather information from parents/carers and school to help us understand how ADHD traits may present across different settings.
Meeting with your clinician
You will spend time with your clinician talking through experiences, strengths and areas of difficulty. For adults, the clinical interview is with you. For children, it is with the parent or carer, and young people aged 16 and over may wish to take part and share their experiences directly.
Feedback & Screening Report
Following the assessment, you’ll receive a detailed written report summarising the evidence gathered, whether significant ADHD traits have been identified, and whether onward referral for a formal diagnostic assessment may be appropriate. Your report will usually be provided within four to six weeks of your face-to-face appointment.

ADHD Screening in Liverpool – A Family’s Experience
A family contacted AYC about their daughter, who had recently started high school. Although school felt that she was generally doing well, at home they were seeing a very different picture.
She was finding it increasingly difficult to manage her attention, organisation and the growing demands of secondary school. She was coming home exhausted and emotional, saying that she couldn’t keep up with the work and describing herself as “thick”. Her family were becoming increasingly concerned about the impact this was having on her confidence and emotional wellbeing.
As part of her ADHD screening, we gathered information from the young person, her family and school and considered this alongside structured ADHD and executive-function measures and an in-clinic QbCheck.
The screening brought these different pieces of information together and identified significant ADHD traits and areas of difficulty that were affecting her day-to-day functioning. Her family received a detailed report which they could share with school to help explain her needs and support conversations about appropriate adjustments.
Importantly, the screening also helped the young person begin to understand herself differently. Rather than feeling that she was “thick” or simply not trying hard enough, she was able to recognise that she learned and processed things differently and that, with the right understanding and support, things could be made more manageable.
Following the screening, the family chose to progress to a full diagnostic assessment with our paediatrician.
For this family, screening provided an important first step: helping their daughter make sense of her own experiences, giving her family and school a clearer understanding of her needs, and providing evidence to support appropriate adjustments and further assessment.
