Understanding ADHD

How ADHD Presents in Children and Young People

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects the brain’s executive functions, the systems responsible for attention, emotional regulation, organisation, memory, and impulse control. Children and young people with ADHD may experience differences in concentration, activity levels, and the way they process and respond to the world around them.

At AYC, we take a compassionate, child-centred approach to understanding ADHD. Our assessments look beyond behaviours alone to build a clear picture of each child’s strengths, needs, and experiences. We recognise that every child is unique, and we work closely with families to provide insight, guidance, and practical recommendations that support confidence, wellbeing, and development.

We believe in recognising and nurturing the positive qualities often associated with ADHD, including creativity, energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm, helping children and young people to thrive both at home and in education.

The QbTest Difference

Clinical Insight + Objective Data.

Diagnosing ADHD shouldn’t be a guessing game. That’s why AYC uses Qb check, an FDA-cleared assessment tool that provides objective data to support clinical decision-making.

Objective, Data-Led Insight

Qb check is a computer-based task that measures attention, activity, and impulse control using your device’s webcam. Completed at home or in our clinic, it provides objective data to support our clinical understanding of ADHD.

No More Guesswork

Qb check is not used in isolation. It forms part of a full assessment alongside a detailed clinical interview and measures of executive functioning (such as the Brown’s Executive Functioning scales), ensuring a thorough and holistic understanding.

Clear, Meaningful Evidence

Results documented in our screening report provide evidence of ADHD traits, helping to dermine whether further assessment for ADHD is appropriate.

The Screening Pathway

A clear, step-by-step process to understanding.

01

Information gathered

Forms completed exploring developmental history and current presentation (ACE / ADHD rating scales and full medical history.)

02

The QbCheck

In-clinic or remotely, simple, non-invasive and objective data collection.

03

Rating Scales

Standardised rating scales completed by parents and teachers to see how symptoms present in different environments.

04

The Browns Executive Functioning Test

This test which is completed in clinic assesses a child or an adults executive functioning skills, which are the cognitive processes that help with goal directed behaviour, planning organisation and self regulation.

05

Face to face clinical interview

Family members and young people 16 years upwards, meet with our qualified, expert Assistant Psychologist / Neurodevelopmental Practitioner to discuss strengths, challenges and experiences.

06

Feedback and Next Steps

Our practitioners compile a detailed screening report. This creates a body of evidence a diagnosing clinician can use to offer a formal ADHD diagnosis, and can support school adjustment requests and EHCP applications.

You will receive the report 4 weeks after your face to face appointment. If at this stage the report is suggestive of your child having ADHD, you can consider whether to pursue a formal diagnosis via one of our partner paediatricians.

Understanding the 3 Presentations

ADHD presents differently in every child.

Hyperactive/Impulsive

Constantly moving, struggling to wait their turn, talking excessively. Often described as “driven by a motor.”

Inattentive

Daydreaming, forgetful, easily distracted. Often missed in school because they aren’t “disruptive”, but they are struggling silently.

Combined Type

A mix of both impulsive energy and difficulty sustaining focus. This is the most common presentation.

Why NICE Compliance Matters

A Diagnosis You Can Trust.

At AYC, we are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based ADHD assessments that families, schools, and healthcare professionals can trust. Our assessments follow NICE guidelines and are carried out in line with recognised best practice standards, ensuring a thorough and clinically robust process.

Gold Standard

We strictly follow NICE Guideline NG87.

School Support

Our reports are robust enough to support applications for EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) and applications for Exam Concessions.

Onward Referrals

Our reports will evidence ADHD traits, which can then be used to request diagnosis via the NHS or alternatively to seek a referral to one of our partner Paediatricians.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. ADHD is often a regulation issue, not a deficit. “Hyper-focus” on high-dopamine activities (like gaming) is a common trait of ADHD.

Not necessarily. Diagnosis opens the door to medication if you choose that path, but it also unlocks school support, therapy, and environmental adjustments. The choice is always yours.

Yes. These conditions frequently overlap. We offer a [Combined Assessment Pathway] which saves time and money compared to two separate processes..
